SYNOPSIS

When 13 year old Praveen is tasked with completing a documentary about his grandmother's wedding photo, he quickly realises the only thing standing in his way of completing it is his non-English-speaking grandmother. With time running short and a language barrier set between him and his grandmother, Praveen must dig deep to find a way to unravel the truth behind the mysterious wedding photo.

CHARACTERS

Like a coconut; white on the inside, brown on the outside, Praveen doesn't speak Tamil despite being a naive 13-year old Indian boy. Patti, her kind, energetic, widowed grandmother who radiates a welcoming and enticing energy, especially seeing her grandkids again. Kiren, a stereotypical-brother that bully's his brother out of fun.

INSPIRATIONS

We wanted to make a film that's easy to digest despite addressing a 'serious' issue in it's story. That is why the story will be told in a style of a mockumentary. This film is aimed at identifying the importance of understanding our heritage as well as undersatnding our families a lot better.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

This film is very close to me as growing up, I too was very naive. Not fully understanding the culture and my heritage, I chose to confide in what I knew, and that is to criticise rather than asses and understand. Not speaking Tamil and one point i thought was an advantage. However now, I see now it’s worth. It’s more than just a language, it’s a form a familiarity between one another. I believe this film helps us identify the importance of understanding our heritage as well as understanding our families a lot better.  This film is important because it speaks to not only the Indian people, but also the rest of Malaysians who go through the same troubles of not being able to converse in their mother tongue and being viewed as a a disgrace or anything less than what we are. When in fact, we are not less of anything. This film is important to my team and me because in some ways, we all have language barriers with someone in our family. Be it speaking in Bahasa Melayu or speaking Cantonese, English or even Tamil, it is something we all have experienced and to be able to tell the story of how we see the world for a change would bring hope for people alike.
